Teaching vocabulary

As I did the activity for group formation using vocabulary, I know that it is not always easy to choose the right materials and even vocabulary (you probably won’t teach third graders words like scrumptious and gourmet when talking about food).

I really liked the exercise we did in our class when we pretended we were young kids and tried to learn new vocabulary. I was actually amazed how many times it is needed to repeat the vocabulary until children remember it, and also by the how many words should be known at certain level of English. (see picture below).

I also found a very interesting picture with 100 most important words in English language, which I think could be very useful to have in class and go through it.

Activities

Odd One Out

Simple activity for YL of English. Write 4 words on a blackboard and students must circle the odd one out.

Example: apple – bread – orange – banana

Stop the Bus

Teacher writes a letter on a blackboard and shouts “Start the bus!”. Students will write as many words (starting on this letter) as possible. After some time (I think that one minute is just enough) the teacher shouts “Stop the bus!” and the student who writes the most words wins. You can repeat this activity many times, and make it special by giving the student who won the previous round the right to shout “Stop the bus!”.
